Washington D.C. Opens the Energy Market to Competition

Prior to 2001, PEPCO controlled all aspects of energy service including the delivery of power and the generation cost which was mandated and approved by the Public Utilities Commission. On January 1, 2001, the energy market was restructured, and energy choice was introduced giving customers the option to choose between several suppliers for the generation portion of their bill. Opening up the market to competition means the Commission no longer regulates the price of generation services.

To ensure PEPCO customers who decide not to choose an alternative energy supplier still receive power, the Commissions came up with the Standard Offer Service (SOS). The SOS handled by PEPCO provides energy services to customers that are not with a competitive supplier at market rates. The SOS rate changes every 12 months at the beginning of June.

How to calculate your Savings

The PEPCO bill will contain a price-to-compare that will show the average price per kWh you are paying to PEPCO for the supply cost. This is the rate that will be used while shopping for energy suppliers.

If the price-to-compare is higher than what is being offered by an energy supplier, then you will be saving money. Simply subtract the price-to-compare by the rate being offered and multiply the difference by your monthly kWh usage to figure out the savings.

Take Advantage of PEPCO’S Energy Wise Rewards

Energy Wise Rewards is a program by PEPCO to help give customers more control over their energy usage. Limit your home’s energy usage with a web-programmable thermostat or switch that cycles the central air condition or heat pump during “peak demand” times of summer. This period falls between June and October. The program is voluntary and completely free. If you’re looking to earn bill credits while helping out the environment, Energy Wise Rewards might be for you.
